Excursion Information

Schools can arrange visits to the Tramway Museum for any Wednesday during the NSW School Term.
(Tuesday bookings are also possible via special arrangement. Please contact our Group bookings Officer to find out more.)

Our Education Unit volunteers are delighted to attend on these occasions to guide you through our exhibits of historic trams and escort you on the tram rides.

A timetable is prepared for the visit to allow different groups to be engaged in different activities at the one time.

Tram rides are always part of the experience for school groups. At least two rides are included in the visit, (one in a later model corridor tram and another in an earlier cross bench type tram). The rides traverse both our National Park and Sutherland lines.

At the same time, our experienced teacher provides a lesson on required syllabus outcomes in our Museum display hall. After a brief introduction, the children are taken to the various older Sydney trams models on display, most of which they can climb aboard. It’s an interactive lesson. Schools usually ensure that these activity groups are about the size of a normal class. (Max 35 students per activity group)

Feel free to take a virtual 3D tour through the Museum’s Display Hall and see inside one of our historic Sydney trams, F 393, complete with info bites about the car. Many thanks to Transport Heritage NSW for this project.

For recess and lunch, schools usually base themselves in our large picnic shed at ‘Railway Square’ in a park setting where they can enjoy a brief play afterwards and use of the toilets close by in Cross Street.

After lunch the whole school group goes on the GRAND TOUR tram ride, which encompasses the Museum’s entire 3.5 kilometers of track.

Located at Loftus, the Museum is reached in reasonable travelling time by most schools in the Sydney region.

Schools close to railway stations sometimes use the rail option, especially on the Eastern Suburbs-Illawarra Line where no change of train is required. Further details are shown on our location page.
